Nanay ni Nena (Nena’s Mother)

By Joshua A. Apolonio

Waking up early in the morning,
Four in the morning or maybe three.
Breakfast for Nena and her sibling,
A sacrificing mother can she be.

Nanay, nanay, here said Nena,
A glance from her, with a smile.
You’re the best, again said Nena.
A hug was given, even for a while.

Nena got home from school,
Nena’s mother opened a door for her quickly.
Nanay, nanay, Nena needs an air cool,
Sun’s blazing heat. So nanay gave it, really.

Nanay, nanay, Nena for you has here a gift.
Nanay, nanay, Nena hopes your heart will uplift.
Gratitude is what she gives, even if the gift is the fifth.
Thank you, Nanay, she said. You will always be a gift.

Nanay, nanay. Nena’s poem is this.
Tribute for you, oh, Nanay. Yes, it is.

Note: This poem is dedicated to all of the mothers all over the world for the celebration of Mother’s Day, May 2015. Happy Mother’s Day!
